Welcome to the first edition of The Modern Savvy’s new monthly feature, Two Ways to Wear!
First up: these awesome green crop chinos I picked up over the holidays at Gap. For as much as I love jeans, I have the hardest time finding pants for work or weekend that fit in all the right places. I tried these on a whim when I had Gap Cash, half assuming they’d be super awkward but long story short, I got them in both green and grey! The fit is excellent, they’re super comfy and they’ve already become wardrobe all-stars. I’ve worn both pairs for work at least a dozen times with heels, booties & flats, with a button down, sweater and tunic, and dressed down with a tee, cozy cardigan, and sneakers.
Whether it’s this or something else, I challenge you in 2017 to really focus on fit. If you’re not a standard size (let’s be honest, who is?!), don’t be shy about altering garments. I swear by a great seamstress who can make a good fitting $50 pair of pants look like you purchased a perfectly fitting designer pair for $250. Be critical; is the length right? Does it need a little nip at the top of your waist? Or, are they never going to be perfect, despite that killer deal you got? (I know it girl, been there, too… it’s never worth it).
PS: speaking of love affairs with new garments… this pale pink scallop sweater is of my dreams. I can wear it year round (summer nights with white denim!) and is one of those unique pieces that other women always compliment. And, hey, let me be honest… I love a sweet compliment. 🙂
FIRST OUTFIT
Scallop blouse: Ann Taylor (a new favorite; wearing XS)
Chinos: Gap (wearing size 2)
Heels: Nine West (similar)
Purse: Kate Spade (similar)
Annndddd, this cardigan. You’re thinking, wrap me up in this bad boy ASAP, I know it! So I featured this in a holiday gift guide and resisted the urge. It has excellent reviews and can be worn multiple ways (I actually wore it yesterday like a regular cardigan — just don’t twist the front before putting over your head) but it was when my girl Sam told me she got it that I immediately had cozy cardigan envy and treated myself over the holidays. It also comes in black and is just as soft in person as it looks.
SECOND OUTFIT
Cardigan: Nordstrom Lingerie (also in black; so cozy & excellent reviews)
Tee: Madewell (under $20)
Chinos: Gap (wearing size 2)
Sneakers: Adidas (also, these for an all-white sneaker option)
Purse: Ann Taylor (similar — love this reversible one for under $50!)
Necklace: BaubleBar
Ring set: Gorjana (similar)
Phone case: Ashley Brooke Designs

January 11, 2017 at 12:40 PMit’s so good to focus on getting a lot of wear out of pieces right out of the gate, because where is the fun in buying something only to have it sit in the closet for six months before you even look at it again (and why do I do that?!)
Also loving your scalloped sweater… anything scalloped and I’m sold!
