I preface today’s post that I don’t know a whole lot about beauty, so you won’t see much of it around these parts. Except… when I find total game changers, and not ones that require a wing and a prayer or complex seven times a day application. I don’t have time for that, however in the past few weeks I realized four of my absolute favorites are thin little pencils with pretty magical powers.
Who doesn’t like an easy beauty product with magical powers? Here goes:
NYX WONDER PENCIL (I use light): I mentioned this little gem over the past few years. Why? Because it’s an insane multi-tasker, and all for under $7. If you decide to try just one of the products in this post, make it this one. Use this as a concealer for any spot treatments and as a concealer/liner in two key spots: around the corners of your nostrils; I know mine can tend to get a little red or my make-up wears off first there, and also, as a liner around your lipstick to prevent any lipstick bleeding. It’s also a brightner — use it in your water line to make your eyes and entire face more awake, or even very lightly under your eyebrows for a similar effect. They’re often out of stock (I’ve purchased at Ulta or Target) so love seeing it now on Amazon, too.
ANASTASIA HIGHLIGHTING DUO: I’ve been a mega long time fan of Anastasia products for my brows (I use this powder duo in caramel with this brush), and the gal at Nordstrom recently recommended this highlighting duo pencil. Apply either side — though I generally use the matte — under the brow bone and then rub it in to brighten up your entire eye. You can also do this with a powder but I’ve found this pencil lasts much longer. Use the shimmery side for evenings, and you can also use both as highlighter on your face.
Kylie Cosmetics lip liner: Ok, I know, it’s from the Kardashian empire and you’re probably laughing at me. Truth is I love watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians (yup!) and… Kylie’s lip products are seriously good. I tried the lip kit (a matte lip stick + pencil) after seeing a good friend and then also Liz rave about them. They have mega staying power and the lip pencils just glide on, and stay put. I even use this one with my other lipsticks because it really helps me define and plump up the look of my lips.
NYX Lip Primer: Can you tell I’m an NYX fan? From what I gather they have a bit of a cult following about make-up people who know they have specific products like the wonder pencil and this that totally accomplish what you need without spending mega bucks. Another budget-friendly find, swipe a layer of this primer on your lips to get your lipstick to stay longer, and where it’s supposed to be. It’s even more helpful as the weather warms. I don’t use this daily but if I have a few back-to-back meetings or a night out, I’ll definitely apply.

January 10, 2017 at 9:30 PMSame… the wonder pencil is more spot treatment or I literally draw over redness on the side of my nose to conceal. PS: lip liners are amazing. Head to the Instagram page though to get a more accurate sense of color.

January 7, 2017 at 6:03 PMThat wonder pencil looks like a total dupe of the one from FX (I think) that I’ve been paying $24 for! Sold!

January 6, 2017 at 8:01 AMI’m a secret Kylie lipkit user, too. I got caught by a friend, and she just shook her head in despair until I convinced her to try it…and she’s now a believer. The only problem I have is that you can’t really tell what the products are going to look like on you, and there are no returns. I’ve ended up giving a couple to my daughter’s babysitter, because they made me look corpse-adjacent! But when the colors work, they are the best.
