Alyson’s Obsessions // January 2017

Alyson's Obsessions // A real girl's six favorite loves of the month, including the new podcast about Oprah!

Hey there, and welcome to the first official Alyson’s Obsessions under The Modern Savvy brand. There are so many products, books, thoughts I have unrelated to daily content here, or where I’m just not sure where to place them yet I’m dying to share them with you… so welcome to all the fun randomness! I could go on and on, and kind of do so under Instagram stores (find me at @themodernsavvy) and on Snapchat (alyson.seligman), however here’s a few items in particular that I’ve been gabbing to girlfriends about.

Making Oprah podcast

I’ve been a mega Oprah fan for years, watching the talkshow in the ’90s and 2000’s, and basically having a love-affair with all things Ops (as I lovingly call her!). As someone who’s is also in the communications field, this podcast offers you a behind-the-scenes look at how the Oprah empire came to be. I’m about half-way through and loving it. Anyone else into podcasts? I’m late to jump on the bandwagon so I’d love to know if there are other ones you’re loving.

Mixed-media jacket

Talk about a “savy steal!” I have this jacket in black from a year or two ago and love it (I just wore it last night, in fact!). It looks chic, is a versatile layering piece and is currently 40% off. It also comes in four colors, and while you can never go wrong with black, I’m so in love with this berry hue. Layer it over a tee, a dress, a skirt & blouse, etc. There’s also a neutral grey, as well asan olive (who else loves Olive everything right now)? Highly recommend you snagging this Kut from the Kloth deal while it’s in stock. For size reference, I’m a small.

Almond Milk Creamer

I know this sounds crazy but I’m highly considering removing diary from my diet for 30 days to see if 1. I could survive without it (I LOVE cheese) and 2. if I feel any health benefits. I always put half-and-half or milk in my coffee so I tested this out a few weeks ago on a whim and love it. We’re already a fan of Silk’s chocolate milk — honestly we can’t keep it in the house because Adam and I will literally guzzle it down from the container! — and this is another win from the brand. It’s definitely a little sweet since it’s a vanilla flavor but it makes for an easy transition. Highly recommend!

Uno WILD Jackpot Game

We used to always play Uno and other card games with my Grandma Rita so a few months ago she gave an Uno set to Sarah. We didn’t know what if she’d be into it but it quickly became our new favorite game. During a recent Amazon procrastination sesh (have to take advantage of my Prime membership!), I stumbled on this jackpot version and ordered it for Hanukkah. It comes with blank cards where you can write your own rules — let’s just say it gets silly, and a lot of fun! If you’re looking for ways to connect with your kids or as a family, highly suggest.

Chocolate Covered Katie’s breakfast muffins

Are you a CCK girl yet? My girlfriends and I are often sharing her sweet recipes, namely ones that replace fatty ingredients with things like chick peas and black beans and everything still tastes AMAZING. Seriously, I wouldn’t think so either but if I can get my girl to eat a black bean brownie you know this girl is legit talented. Anyway, she has an incredible following and in our attempt to have more food prep going on here, we (Evan was a huge help!) made these breakfast oatmeal muffins last week. They’re so good, and once you make them once you can see how you can easily customize them with nuts, nut butters, etc. While this recipe is from a few years ago, it was still listed as one of her 12 most popular of 2016!

Cold shoulder ruffle trim pullover

Gah, this pullover is so stinkin’ cute! In honestly, it’s actually en route to me as you’re reading this. I had it in my cart for a few weeks and finally pulled the trigger last week. I can easily wear this a number of ways, and find the ruffle and cold shoulder details so fun. I know I’d compliment the hell out of any girl wearing it, so for $40 I decided to make it mine.

I need to try some of those recipes! I bet the kids would love making them too! I’ve been able to ditch milk for almond milk in cereal and coffee (I’ll have to try the creamer), but haven’t been able to give up cheese!!

I love the burgundy jacket! It’s such a great piece. I’m not looking to cut cheese out of my life ever lol but that does look like a great substitute, especially for someone with lactose issues!

LOL, not sure I’m capable of it but I’m so curious about how certain foods impact our health and body.
