How I Create Me Time in my Home Office

(This post is sponsored by Target. All opinions are 100 percent this girl’s.)

Without sounding selfish — although I suppose I’m OK with that — I’m committed to focusing more time on me this year. Too often, I want to be there for others, and I often say yes when it’s likely not the best decision for me.  It’s impossible to be everywhere to make everyone happy, and ultimately it’s draining — so where’s the joy?

While I’m a social person, I also love being at home, often by myself (sorry, husband and kids!), enjoying the quiet, perhaps lying on the couch or the bed in our guest room watching TV, digging through old photo albums, blogging or reading. OK, or de-cluttering that crazy bathroom drawer — the outcome makes this type-A girl so happy!

To create more “me time” in my house, I recently revamped my space in our cluttered quasi office/guest bedroom. You should have seen the space before. Think of serene. OK, now think of the opposite; that was our space! My husband and I share this long desk where papers were everywhere; kids’ art projects, books, paperwork, everything. The updated version is so much better!

To de-clutter your space, bring a garbage bag along with a box (for donations) into a room and start weeding things out. Donating is paying it forward, knowing that something you love will get the use it deserves. Once you’ve de-cluttered, invest in some quality, pretty storage pieces in a serene (or, if you prefer, high-impact!) color palette that’s just right for you.

Add a few pretty pieces of artwork, mirrors and other accessories to bring you joy as you enter (even if it’s the corner of a room!). For my office, I added a few books as well, so I can cozy up on the adjacent bed with my favorite faux fur blanket.

More ways I’m going to create “me time” (that might work for you, too!):

  • Wake up 15 minutes earlier so I’m not frantic in the morning
  • Continue to get to work a few minutes earlier to enjoy the solitude, even if that means enjoying my coffee while playing on Facebook
  • Stay current on my to-do lists so I can more effectively get things done
  • Commit to working out at least twice per week
  • Treat myself to pretty flowers and a magazine or new book at least every few weeks

Desk & Beyond: Heart Pin Board // Letter Trays // Desk Storage Unit // Stapler // Paper Weight // Office decor via the $1-$4 Dollar Spot Pins at Target // “Heck Yeah” Coffee Mug (love this one) // Adult Coloring Book (options here) // Faux Fur Throw // My floral pajama set (the pretty print reminds me of the brand Rifle Paper & Co.)

Inquiring minds… How do you create “me time”?

I LOVE your desk! Please share where one can find this beauty. Me time is vital for sanity and it’s not selfish. I believe the ending result is that your children and husband will benefit from a calmer and happier you.

Couldn’t agree more, Lisa! A happier me is a happier family. 🙂 My desk is from IKEA; it’s about four years old but I believe it’s a pretty standard style.

Hi Nuria: thank you! The desk is from Ikea… about four years old but pretty sure they still have the same style.
