5 In My Outfits/ STYLE

Workout Motivator

This time of year, I’m either super motivated to get moving, or all I want to do is lay on the couch, eat a container  Jingle Jangle from Trader Joe’s and watch television while all wrapped up in a cozy blanket.

To motivate, I have to confess that wearing workout clothing that makes me feel good is critical. So many women say they’ll treat themselves to a “good” outfit once they reach a certain goal. FAIL. The problem is that they’re never motivated because they don’t feel good even going to the gym.

In full disclosure, I did a tiny partnership with Athleta to share a new item on Instagram. I mention that because —> 1. Even though it was small, major goals for me, because 2. I LOVE Athleta (owned by the Gap family) and 3. I’ve been a customer since it opened by me a few years ago. 4. I tell you all this because this here is not sponsored in any way — they don’t even know I’m sharing these images again. I’m just so pumped and happy by this outfit that I had to show it to you.

But let’s back it up: trying on workout clothing is like jeans and bathing suit shopping. The worst… until you find what you feel good in. And, I promise you, as much as I love Athleta I for sure had a few pairs that did not work for me. This pair though, with this popular new 7/8 length and side pockets, has been incredible.

My recommendations for shopping for workout wear:

  1. Be mentally prepared. You can’t rush the process. I’ve tried on some leggings that I so thought would be amazing and fail, I felt gross. Then others: bam! Everything got sucked up and in, and mama became a happy camper.
  2. Don’t eat a giant meal first. Who wants to try on spandex and fitted clothes after eating? Sounds obvious but it’s easy to go during or after a lunch break or meal to the mall. Conversely, don’t go in hangry… you’re never going to find something if you’re famished and unhappy to start.
  3. Find an amazing sports bra. It all starts with a great, supportive bra. Whether you’re in A or G, take the time to find the right amount of support for your girls. It makes all the difference.
  4. Get it now, don’t wait. Like I said before, get at least one outfit (go budget, by all means) so you feel good going to the gym. Plus, you can’t see your progress if you’re in some old t-shirt and ill-fitting sweatpants.
  5. Treat yourself. You can absolutely find good quality and cute workout clothing at lower price points. Two favorites are Old Navy and Forever 21 (trust; I have leggings, a bra & a fun tank). Otherwise, I’m usually all for Athleta and Zella (sold at Nordstrom & Nordstrom Rack).
  6. Update your sneaks. I know you think your pair is cute butttt…. it might not be best for working out. There’s absolutely a difference between stylish sneaks (even brands like Nike and Adidas) for running errands, and then for gym time, workout classes and walks/runs. I’m wearing Brooks here and LOVE them; I had an older random colored pair so I’d often switch to my sleeker NIke’s. After I sprained my ankle my PT basically said I should never be in those. Flexible soles offer very little support if you need the stability (I do). I love, love this newer pair of Brooks I bought, they look cute & are a way better workout option. If yours bother your feet or ankle, or the tread is wearing away, update. It can cause serious problems down the line.
