Vent Sesh: Surviving the Holidays

Surviving the Holidays // the reality of the hectic holiday time

The holidays are stressful, you guys.

Whoever thinks they’re just holiday music, lights, cheer and yummy food is not living in this reality.

It’s for sure a magical time of year — I love driving to see twinkling lights in nearby neighborhoods, eating apple pie and shopping for loved ones (ok, and maybe myself a little) — but the holidays are also stress-FULL.

There are families, and commitments, and packed calendars, and possibly travel, and work, and let’s not forget lack of sleep.

Trying to make everyone happy can feel like a full-time job.

And, the sad reality: it’s impossible to make every body happy.

Everyone has their own agenda.

I’ve spoken to multiple friends who have issues over which family they visit. They get guilt, they have to run to multiple houses (someone told me they eat two Thanksgiving dinners!), just to appease the masses.

How crazy is that?

The holidays are supposed to be about love, understanding, compassion and joy, and yet at the end of the day, let’s be honest. Crazy family has their crazy ways.

The calendar is already getting so intense I feel like I’m making plans for after the New Year.

Reality: I basically want to crawl under the covers for a marathon of Real Housewives.

This is where my instincts have to kick in, and if you’re in the same boat, yours as well.

Say NO. Just say NO. I find that if I say yes, it doesn’t mean things will necessarily go more smoothly and that others will be happy. So at the end of the day, prioritize you. Prioritize you and your immediate family.

You can’t be a good, kind, compassionate human being when you’re running on empty.

Coffee and mascara and concealer will only get us so far.

Please focus on prioritizing you this holiday season.

I’ll be sharing here some fun, helpful holiday content include gift guides, what-to-wear for certain events, other Vent Sesh posts and more, but I’m also game for doing a Q&A, and other content that helps and inspires you to live your best life. So, basically, let’s connect so we can survive this madness together.

At least you know we can hang out every Wednesday night for our Wine Down Wednesday on Facebook Live (weekly at 9 pm EST)! #shamelessplug #pourmeanother

Happy holidays, and you can do this!

You nailed it Allyson! Too much and constant obligations, money spent, coffees, parties, dinners….. All overkill. Rather be sailing away on a cruise in lieu of the other stuff that you do during Christmas…Chanukah .
Guess we all get through it year after year…

Absolutely. I also much rather be sailing away, or lounging on the beach. We’ll get through it, and make sure you put yourself first!

I’ve been following for awhile but have never commented on your blog before, but this post made me just want to say THANK YOU. I’ve always dreaded the holidays because of the obligations and stress that come with it, and I’m so happy to see somebody acknowledging that rather than being all “tra la la yay holidays!” The holidays should indeed be about love and compassion and all the good things, but it sometimes gets lost in commitments and guilt and I appreciate your reminder that we can’t happily participate in it all unless we’re happy ourselves. So, a big THANK YOU for this.
