Alyson’s Obsessions // December 2016

Happy December, ladies! Gosh, sounds crazy saying that since we’re nearly done with the month and already looking to January. I realized this year flew by way faster than I intended. It was a big year, as I made some business decisions, dealt with the loss of my dad, watched Evan and Sarah grow in so many incredible ways, and lots more. At the end of the day though, I want 2017 to be more intentional. It’s not about creating resolutions for a different type of year… it’s really about committing to change you want in your life. I want to be more present, to be less attached to my phone, and to explore a new hobby/passion for myself… there’s actually a beginners hip hop class around here (just wishing it wasn’t at 8:30 pm on a Monday!).

Anyway, back to why you’re here: my latest obsessions! Gosh, I could go on and on… I’ve been glued to the computer doing gift guides, searching for sales, and shopping for my family so this could be a mile long! At the same time, I’m focusing here on the best mix of  style, life and family. Let me know if you’re crushing on anything in particular this month!

Ann Taylor necklace: if you’ve been following here for a while, you know I love my tassels and long necklaces. Most of mine are from Alexandra Gioia, but when I saw this in burgundy I NEEDED it. I have nothing like it, and it’s even more beautiful in person. The color will complement so many pieces in my closet, from creams and blacks, to stripes & even prints. I purchased it during a 50% off sale and couldn’t be happier. It also comes in black by the way.

Bringing Up BebeIf you’ve hung out within a 15-mile vicinity you’ve heard me mention this book. I’m about 140ish pages deep and while I’m reading it about seven years too late, I’m still learning so, so much… like I’m having ah-ha moments nearly every page! Basically, it’s all about how French mothers from day one just naturally instill a sense of patience, responsibility, respect and ownership of self in children that many American mothers do not. There are so many good examples that you’ll find yourself nodding your head about. I’ll write about this book more soon but I started reading it after about 10 moms in a local Facebook moms group mentioned it in response to a question about a picky eater (our girl, Sarah is the worst!). I figured it couldn’t hurt to try. I’m regularly now working on specific strategies as a result. MOMS: READ IT.

Gucci Disco Bag: Swoon! Yup, I’ve been drooling about this designer bag for ages. It’s so gorgeous and I’m all for splurging on what’s important to you (my only thing is never go into debt for things like this!). For example, I’m SO hard on my shoes that I can’t really justify a mega spend on footwear. I’ve been saving up for a nice black or nude designer bag that can go from day to night, dressy to casual, and this bag is on my mega hit list… too bad there’s not a two-for-one special. 😉 I love the cross body strap and the neutral G detail. The newer version is here, and while it’s gorgeous, too, I like that this is an inch larger and can be styled more casual or dressy.

Happy Hanukkah, Curious George: this year, Hanukkah and Christmas are roughly the same day (the first night of Hanukkah falls on Christmas Eve). We celebrate Hanukkah over here so I love using books as a way to explain and explore the holidays with our kids. We are fortunate that nearly each month for free we get books sent by PJ Library — this incredible national initiative where they mail you awesome age-appropriate books for years, no strings or anything — so we have a few Hanukkah books we love. But hey, who can resist an Amazon purchase? 🙂 Curious George is a great option (and a cute gift for kids, too!).

albeit-dry-brush-cleaner

Albeit Dry Brush Cleaner: I never knew this was a thing — did you?? — but while browsing Anthropologie recently I  asked them about the coolest/best/favorite beauty products. They instantly showed me this product, and I figured with the promo at the time, it was worth testing. They were totally right! Simply spray it on your brush, twirl your brush on a dry towel and voila… it removes most of the residue! I’d still suggest a more thorough cleaning from time to time but this is incredible. Makeup goes on so much better with clean brushes. Since this is a  dry spray you can use  immediately afterward.  There’s also a similar product available at Sephora.

capri blue volcano

Capri Blu candle in Volcano: Another recommendation from the ladies at Anthro… this candle in Volcano is where it’s at. Apparently it’s the brand’s (and one of the stores) most popular scents, often selling out. I’ve been wanting a new candle  for my bedside and the fruit and citrusy notes complement light mountain greens for a scent apparently everyone loves. It seems s like it will last a long time, but the jar is so beautiful it will certainly be put to good use once I finish the candle. Nordstrom also carries this one.

I am really into the Gucci bag too, but I don’t know if it’s because I love the BAG or I love all of the bloggers that have it. You know what I mean? But I do know that it would be a life-time investment but I am just not sure.

I’ve been wanting the Gucci disco also for forever! And I have to go pass Anthro today to see if this is the candle I love. I’ve been having a crappy few weeks and I think I’m going to just treat myself to the mini size one today.

    that bag! gorgeous!

the capri candles are my favorite… I always have a volcano in the house or give them as gifts. Last year I gave one to a friend and she said “oh yeah, this is the smell of your house!” haha!

I just purchased a capri blue candle in volcano. I haven’t lit it yet but I have heard so many good things about it. That dry brush cleaner looks very enticing and I love that Gucci bag – such a classic bag you’ll use for years!
