Vent Sesh: Who Has Time to Work?

Mom on the go

Mom on the go

I swear I could spend my entire day racing around to do things  completely unrelated to my full-time job.

No wonder why services where dry cleaning, groceries and meals are delivered to us are becoming so popular.

Is it this time of year that has us all crazed, or are we just becoming crazier?

I’m constantly running around like errand lady. Which is kind of shocking considering how much I love Amazon Prime (and subsequently my UPS guy).

I like to do my own grocery shopping (ok, I’m also Type A and someone picking bread or eggs before possibly looking at the expiration date gives me anxiety). There are the toiletries my husband realizes he needs roughly 30 minutes after I return from Publix or Target.

A car gets a flat tire. Or needs an oil change.

There’s that random holiday luncheon.

Don’t forget the coffee date you committed to three months ago so someone can “pick your brain.” (I’ll get into that another day).

The kiddie birthday parties, ordering diapers, and hostess gifts, and Hanukkah and Christmas gifts, and teacher gifts.

Must schedule the house cleaner (and clean before they come), coordinate the babysitter, and then of course, there’s a stomach bug going around that everyone catches, but not at the same time.

I’m not saying I mind doing all of these things — though hey, it must be sweet having a squad like Beyonce or Kim — I’m just wondering how women and moms today are supposed to get all of this stuff done, and also handle a demanding 40+ hour work week.

Fortunately so many companies realize that we got to GSD (get shit done!) and are becoming increasingly flexible with working hours. But, I know that’s not the norm.

Still, friends often talk about how they’re racing from one place to the next. And, even if companies are getting more understanding, why are we piling so much on our plate?

I even now often proudly declare NO (it’s insanely empowering!), yet even with that, there’s so much that must get done.

Do you think we pile too much on ourselves?

I seriously waffle between wanting to conquer the world, and wanting to crawl back under the covers.

Being a full-time employee and find time to balance the other sides of your life can be pretty tricky.
    Everything nowadays seems stressful! Ugh!

It really can be… I’ve realized saying no is pretty much everything (and super empowering!).

I hear ya sister! I often find myself wondering if the mad dash is self imposed or am I just trying to keep the pace with life’s demands. A very old woman once said to me that she found it amusing but sad that the new generation of moms are ‘seeking balance’. She said there is no such thing, you just handle each day. “Chasing this balance is what makes you all so frantic because it doesn’t exist everyday, all day- it’s a silly pursuit.”

Yes, yes, YES!!! Its exhausting and even though I feel like I’m usually pretty highly functioning, I’m ready for a nice long vacation. Hang in there girlie.

Exactly! My kids are both in school, and I only work part time, but still feel like I am always trying to catch up. Daily I wonder how all of the full time working Moms get it done!! This time of year is a wild combination of wonderful and completely overwhelming.

Omg you are a mind reader…this is how I feel every day. Wondering how to find balance (live in a small town so not much of the service stuff here to help). It’s like treading deep water…you are in survival mode but after a while you just get tired and it seems as if you bounce between these two levels
