Have Your Kids Repeat This Daily

I heard this remarkable women, Alechia Reese, speak at a women’s event a few months ago and was immediately drawn to her. She was smart, funny & honest. Plus, she feels confident she and Oprah will be BFF one day, and since I think the same, we were destined to become fast friends! We chatted for a bit after the conference and turns out we have a lot in common, including six-year-old daughter’s destined to rule the world (and currently/already, a little boy crazy). She shared with me that daily her daughter must repeat the following: “I can get married once I’ve traveled the world, know myself and get a good education.” I LOVED this, and immediately thought how I could implement something similar in my own home.

Then, a week or two later, did you guys also see this video of a dad having his daughter recite these daily affirmations? Talk about melting my heart! Instilling these messages in the hearts and minds of girls and boys early is everything.

Girls so much grow up in this princess and fairly tale and need a prince to rescue you world that ugh, gets to me a bit. Girls can wear blue, be super heroes and grow up to be anything they want. While we all know that, there are so many subtle actions during the course of each day that tell girls just slightly otherwise.

I love the idea of daily affirmations that infuse intelligence with beauty, bravery and kindness all in one. You can easily Google “best affirmations for kids” or something along those lines, however here’s a sampling of ones that might work for you and your family. And, ladies: this is not only for the little ones. Think we can all benefit from looking in the mirror, and reciting these lines until we believe them about ourselves.

  1. I am worthy.
  2. I am smart.
  3. I will be a good listener today.
  4. I will display kindness, even in the face of rudeness.
  5. There is no one else like me.
  6. I am brave.
  7. I am helpful.
  8. I am blessed.
  9. I am beautiful.
  10. I will try my best, and be proud of the result.
  11. I love my body.
  12. I will be honest.
  13. I have so many brilliant ideas.
  14. My family and friends love me.
  15. I do my best in school.
  16. I will not judge others.
  17. I work hard.
  18. I am awesome.
  19. I am thoughtful.
  20. I am strong.

I love this idea! I changed the order a little so it ends with “There is no one else like me”, and am going to have my daughter practice saying all of them daily. She has a mean girl situation (at 8!!!) going on, and it’s really disheartening to see and be unable to do anything since I’m not at school…plus I want her to learn to fight her own battles (but I still want to go tell this girl off). I’ve tried telling her how amazing she is, but hopefully having her repeat these daily will help. Thank you so much for sharing!

I saw the video when it went viral and loved it, then did nothing with it! Happy to see this post. Am saving and will be printing this out to recite with my kids. Raising girls is so hard and I already see some things I need to “undo”, whether it was me who caused her behavior, society, nature (vs. nurture) or a combo. Instilling positive thinking and confidence into kids can’t start too early! Thank you

I love this so much. I can’t think of a better way to help kids learn to be respectful of others and themselves! I don’t know that we had affirmations exactly when I was growing up, but these things were definitely drilled into us and it’s so important!

You’re awesome Alyson! I hope you tell yourself that too!

That video is so sweet. It melted my heart. I pray affirmations about my little one, but I never really considered having her say them. I will definitely be giving this a try!

Lauren, same here. I think about all of these for my children but I don’t often enough ask them to say it. That constant repetition really makes an impact.
