Email Addiction

email addiction

I was watching the Today Show when they started chatting about a recent report that addressed our addiction to checking our email is similar to playing slot machines… we keep hitting refresh hoping that one time it won’t be junk, that it will be a good, juicy and worthwhile piece of mail.

Most of us can likely admit a bit of a phone addiction but wow, that really registered. I hit refresh on my phone an embarrassing and offensive amount each day, if we’re being honest. I use the excuse that monitoring three email addresses (blog, work & personal/junk/sales) but really, there’s no need. Plus, we all know it’s never just email. Then Instagram happens, and then I should check that Facebook alert, and then, I wonder if there’s any breaking news.

Are you a compulsive frequent email checker?  To curb the habit, consider it like junk food you don’t want in the house: keep it out of arms reach. I always charge my  phone on the other side of the room, even during the day, and when I’m trying to crank out a job on deadline, I move it off my desk. It’s shocking how often I reach for it and start checking my mail and then apps without even realizing. Talk about a productivity killer, and then you know you’re doing that while socializing with others.

Put. Down. The. Phone. Let’s go live our lives.

I did this new thing I’m obsessed with where I turned on post notifications for all the IG people I genuinely care about and when it alerts me, that’s the only time I check Instagram. No more scrolling for me! It’s made a HUGE difference.

Hmm, that’s a great idea! Can you stop yourself from not scrolling? That’s always been my concern about turning on notifications.

Oh yes… just hoping for a ‘good’ email amongst all the junk. (where is an invitation for a good sponsored post when I need one?) I’m always trying to unsubscribe, but somehow the newsletters, refinery 29, and a half dozen clothing stores wont relent.

It’s not uncommon for my phone to get down to 20% battery while I’m at work because of all my compulsive checking.

I’m probably worse with social media than email, but yeah, email is checked way too often!

They all are so hard to control — feel glued to my phones some days.
