Vent Sesh: Addicted to Online Shopping

It started innocently enough.

I used to love going into stores browsing to find exactly what I need.

But the more kids you have, the more stuff it feels like you need. And, the less time you have to find it.

A few years ago, I was the (clearly naive) girl who didn’t get online shopping. It’s also how I like reading a printed newspaper compared to reading it online. I know, I’m like a dinosaur (crazy old, and extinct!)

But, ah, convenience. (and packages at my doorstep).

I mean, online shopping is one of the world’s best gifts to — well, the world! — and particularly the time impaired.

Amazon Prime made it so easy, first to order obvious stuff like holiday gifts and printer ink. And, stores, who baited me to sign up for their email lists, started getting me with exclusive discounts and previews of new arrivals before I could get to the mall.

People assume that with blogging that I’m constantly buying. And yes, they’re technically accurate but it’s not quite as glamorous as that seems. I’m not necessarily buying for me… I’m buying to keep this house over here a movin’.

I order our coffee pods, and shampoos, new camp supplies like pool towels, bathing suits, goggles and swim diapers, books for the kids, Adam’s electric razor, phone case, a vacuum, my face wash, the list goes on. If it saves me a trip, consider it done.

Let’s be honest… it’s a fun little rush when you add items to your shopping cart, purchase and then… woohoo, like magic, there’s a package on my doorstep as quickly as the next day. And, who doesn’t love opening a package? I’ll settle for opening the new razor… you guys can relate, right??

Somehow along the way this spring though, I realized all this “time efficiency” was getting excessive. I candidly don’t think I’m purchasing unnecessarily but I’m doing so more out of habit, with less intention, and with less awareness of our overall budget than I used to. And, um, I’ve memorized our AMEX number.

Trust me, I’m still clicking purchase ladies, because heck, online ordering is a total game changing time saver. But, I’m also trying to curb the habit, even buy more of what I need at once so I’m not constantly going down the rabbit hole of shopping online so often.

I’m also a pretty meticulous returner (decide ASAP if you like what you bought; if not, put it in your car right away so it’s easy to return to store or ship back so you’re not losing money when you find an item months later hiding in the back of your closet).

It’s crazy to think how our habits have changed from just a generation earlier, just like cell phone usage. Am I the only one who ponders these random life moments and changes?

I’m curious to see where things are now almost a year later. I myself use to be a heavily addicted online shopper. I can’t say I’m cured of the problems now, but I am much better in control. I am like you…I memorized my credit card number *monkey covers eyes emoji* It’s always refreshing to hear people talk about their problems so openly! Thank you for sharing 🙂

Ha, monkey definitely covering eyes emoji on this one! I can’t say I’m better though I am SO much more aware of it, and what my needs are. I’m now working from home and less on the go (and passing places I might need to pop into) but I’m trying to get back on track. I have a new AMEX so that has helped, LOL!

I have been thinking about this a lot too. Not just the consumption part, but all that packaging and waste. Would it be so hard for me to walk to the store to buy the things I need vs. Amazon Prime-ing them all to my apartment? Oof. It is addicting (and so convenient) but the repercussions on the environment are not so great either.

You’re totally right… I’ve realized my recycle bin is getting intense each week, and it’s also because of Amazon and Nordstrom boxes. I try to reuse when possible but they’re mostly just put in the bins.

Online shopping is one of my biggest downfalls. Especially since it became so easy to do it on your phone! I will always be throwing all sorts of things into my amazon cart, using subscribe and save, and just generally buying all sorts of things I both need and don’t necessarily need. Blogging has made me into a fiend – I once spent months tracking down this one thing I saw another blogger had, and that is not limited to clothes either, I’ve created ebay saved searches for coffee mugs. I am an online shopping addict. When I got back from CA I had this STACK of boxes and envelopes, from when I was bored in the airport or woke up too early and couldn’t fall back asleep… yet I’m never satisfied, the list of things I crave is unending. It was all I could do to not throw a bicycle in my cart when it was $40 off over memorial day weekend!

I online shop quite a bit, even if it’s just looking around. It’s hard not to look, when you sign up for store emails and you get their sale and new arrival emails. It makes me want everything! With the recent semi-annual sales, I did buy, and at least for Victoria’s Secret, their selection online was so much better than in the store, so I will definitely do the same next time. I hate paying for shipping, so usually if I have to pay for it, I won’t buy it. I search for coupon codes before I buy and go through Ebates, so at least I’ll get more out of online shopping.

Totally agree with you; the convenience added with the extra layer of free shipping or possible coupon codes makes it hard to resist.

Online shopping can be a little too easy sometimes! I find myself buying a lot of clothing at once, but honestly return most of it. I like being able to try on in the privacy of my own home, and at this point most stores have a way better selection of items online than in stores…especially for us petite ladies! a

You’re not the only one! I started with electronics, more recently I ordered furniture from Ikea, but I’m a bit apprehensive about starting to order clothes, just because sizes vary a lot from shop to shop and even from product to product. I hate returning things, especially since this is not always free and easy in my country, and I also find it disappointing when I get an item I want and then don’t have it anymore. I can agree, however, that online shopping is very addictive, and I’m really trying to refrain myself from buying all the things I see and like…
