The Best Age Appropriate Bathing Suits

While swimsuit season should be carefree where we’re playing and relaxing by the pool or beach, soaking in the Vitamin D (with our sunscreen on of course), hanging with fam and friends, ok, and perhaps chasing after little ones, it’s also a time when you’re pretty much completely on display and all you have is a piece of lycra keeping your goods from the world. I mean, let’s be honest: that can be a bit terrifying even for the most self confident women.

I get it. For years I’ve had intense frustrations finding a suit to fit; one-pieces never worked due to my super petite top half and I always felt frustrated trying on bikinis with either too-small bottoms, or suits that didn’t flatter my chest.

Funny side story: yes, so I got a breast augmentation just a few weeks ago and yup, I’m super happy with the results. In a blouse or tee it’s only slightly noticeable (I didn’t go super big or anything) but I tried on a bikini last week — WOAH, mama! Ha, I’m so not used to skin outside the triangle of my bikini… felt so scandalous. 😉 Will have to get used to this so I totally get the challenges both women with smaller busts and those trying to balance larger ones face when it comes to suit.

So back to the topic… age appropriate bathing suits! LADIES: DO NOT HIDE IN BLACK. (it doesn’t work; we still see you).

Please, please, please, do yourself a favor. A flattering print or bold color in a good quality material is generally way more flattering… and so much more fun. Think about it: if you’re wearing a gorgeous suit in a bold floral, a palm print, elongating stripes or even a bright pink or cobalt blue, that’s what people will look at. And, look, we all have our stuff, our little insecurities, so who the heck cares. I have dimples on my thighs but I refuse to sit on the sidelines during all the summer fun because of them. Life’s too short, and there are too many memories to make.

Check out the age appropriate bathing suits below. Everything’s under $150 but I didn’t include any budget buys because when it comes to suits you want the best fabric possible. Yes, I have a few great tankinis from Target from a few years back that work but there really is a difference when you invest in a good quality suit that holds you in the right places, especially if you have some smokin’ curves. I have/love the convertible Seafolly two-piece suit below and plan on ordering a few to test from Athleta; a few friends swear by their swimwear, and I love, love how they have dozens of styles you can mix and match.

THE BEST AGE APPROPRIATE BATHING SUITS

Best swim suits for summer that are chic (without being scandalous!)

AGE APPROPRIATE BATHING SUITS DETAILS:

Two piece: Tommy Bahama striped top and bottom // Athleta // Seafolly convertible suit with bottoms // Saha sport suit  with bottom // Athleta //  Saha Boho print

One pieceInk & Water // //Kenneth Cole monikini // Athleta  // Victoria’s Secret // La Blanca bandeau // Anthropologie sea print

Finding a suit can be time consuming, and I know frustrating, but it’s worth the search. We all have such unique bodies so there’s no way that a major manufacturer can get it right for each of us (i.e, it’s them not you!). Don’t be hard on yourself. Enjoy how gorgeous you are, and focus on all the fun you’ll be having in the suit. Confidence elevates every outfit (and hey, fake it ’til you make it).

Around this time, I started noticing that many of my peers were gravitating towards frumpy tankinis, skirted suits, or “figure-enhancers” with obvious control panels that sucked them in so much that flesh oozed out at the armhole and leg. Your choice of a swimsuit can age you as fast as “mom jeans.”

Congratulations on your surgery! After my lift, it took me a while to figure out how to dress my “new” figure. This post motivated me to pull out all my suits and try them on (gutsy since I still have bruising and bloat from emergency gall bladder surgery last week!). I enlisted my 7 yo boys’ opinions. I highly recommend getting the kids opinions- not a word about my body, only criticism of the suit- “those flowers are too giant too wear!” Overall decided to donate about half. Kept what I loved and definitely felt best in the brights and patterns.- as you suggested

Yay for the brights and patterns! Hope you’re feeling OK after that gall bladder surgery (I know it’s hard to find time to rest), and so awesome you just did that with your kids… they’re so honest in a great, constructive way. Now you know you have a few suits that look great on you. Now, I need to do this!

Finding a great swimsuit is the worst! I feel like I’m more of a one-piece gal these days but because of my long torso have such a hard time finding one that fits well. These are some great options!

Athleta has the best suits! They fit well, don’t reveal too much and they have the best prints. Great list!
